Dining around Modesto

By Heidi Howell

A gathering place for excellent food and atmosphere, Appetéz (825 West Roseburg Ave., 209-577-5099; dinner for two $50) specializes in weddings, banquets, catering, casual dining, take-out and special events. Whether you plan to feed 600 guests, host a small dinner party or unwind by the fire with someone special, Appetéz (pronounced “appetease”) satisfies your cravings with its eclectic seasonal menu.

Tease your taste buds with an Appetez’r like Quesadilla de Pear, Crab Rangoons or Stuffed Mushrooms, then get acquainted with a Chocolate Waldorf Chicken Salad or Harvest Chicken Salad. Don’t miss the Cannelloni Florentine or select from entrees ranging from Southwest Cilantro Lime Chicken and Balsamic-Honey Glazed Pork, to Appetez Surf and Turf and Chicken Fiorentina all Arancia. Mouthwatering desserts include Ginger Crème Brûlée, Apple Tiramisu and Brownie Decadence.

Inquire about the Silhouette Booth, traveling butler services, gourmet cookie platters and homemade dressings and breads. Appetez (www.appetez.com) is open for lunch weekdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and dinner Mon. through Sat., 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Reminiscent of an urban metropolis dinner club, Restaurant 15-O-Five (1505 J St., 209-571-1505; dinner for two $65) has been voted “Best Martini” by The Modesto Bee’s Readers’ Choice Awards for four years running.

Named after its street address, this sleek American bistro is known for superior meats and fresh fish. Soups are created daily, although the real hook is phenomenal Clam Chowder on Fridays.

The ever-changing menu presents finds like the 15-O-Five Caesar Salad, Thai Chicken Salad, Pan Roasted “Jerk” Pork Chop, Pan Seared Chicken Breast, Herb Crusted Lamb Rack and Grilled Filet Mignon. Finish your meal with enticing Strawberry Shortcake, Lava Cake or Crème Brûlée.

The first-class dining and extraordinary personal service delivered by a team of highly competent wait staff and bartenders bring customers back to this “happening” place. Of note, live music fills the air Friday nights, with a live DJ on Thursdays and Saturdays. Lunch is served weekdays, 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., dinner Tuesday through Saturday, 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Papapavlo’s Mediterranean Bistro & Wine Bar (1320 Standiford Ave., 209-525-3995; dinner for two $30) will draw you in with its magnificent desserts and pastries, made fresh daily. Experience Baklava Cheesecake, Rizogalo Rice Custard, Chocolate Silk Mousse and Chocolate Baklava.

Before dessert, try the tempting Tiropitas appetizer: buttery phyllo triangles filled with feta cheese. Then treat your taste buds in a symphony of flavors with the Mediterranean Pizza, Spanakopita or Moussaka. Word is, the double-cut Rack of Lamb brings guests in from all over the world.

Papapavlo’s Modesto location, which opened a few years ago, follows in the footsteps of the highly successful Stockton Papapavlo’s (7555 Pacific Ave.). Both restaurants showcase the diverse flavors of Greece, France, Italy and America, using recipes that have been in the family for nearly 60 years.

Discover Papapavlo’s convenient catering/delivery services and special, expanded menu. Visit the Modesto restaurant Monday through Thursday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
