Turlock’s Emanuel Medical Center delivers babies, health care and job satisfaction
By Heidi Howell Bee Advertising Staff Writer
Established
by Turlock physicians in 1917, Emanuel Medical Center offers
family-focused health care that blends hi-tech advances with
old-fashioned personal service.
The comprehensive, acute care
hospital and nearby structures house 149 acute care beds, 145 skilled
nursing beds and a 49-bed residential care facility. Services include an
outpatient facility offering advanced diagnostic and therapeutic
services and a high-tech acute care facility. Acute care departments
include surgical services, critical care, emergency, pediatrics,
maternal/child, oncology and dialysis. Also available are home care,
hospice, cancer treatment, pharmacy and more.
“We just opened our
new Mary Stuart Rogers Birthing Center,” says Jan Yost, RN, nurse
recruiter. “Baby deliveries have nearly doubled to about 180 per month.”
Currently,
the hospital is equipped with 24-hour basic emergency care and a
helipad to transfer patients to higher care facilities. Yost says the
emergency department handles roughly 200 patients per month, and “we
will break ground for a new emergency department next spring.”
Emanuel
Medical Center is one of three medical facilities affiliated with
Chicago’s Covenant Ministries of Benevolence, an outreach ministry of
The Evangelical Covenant Church. The hospital’s mission is to “create a
healthier community” through: • Operating on the foundation of Christian values. • Focusing on health promotion and prevention of disease. • Providing comprehensive, high quality health services for patients and their families. • Maintaining fiscal responsibility to allow for maintenance, growth and development. • Creating a collaborative partnership among community health resources.
One
of the region’s largest employers, Emanuel Medical Center employs
roughly 1,200 people. There are two ways to learn about job openings.
Jobs are listed on the website at www.emanuelmed.org, where candidates
may apply online 24/7, or they can stop by the hospital at 825 Delbon
Avenue in Turlock anytime to see the bulletin board postings and obtain
an application. The Human Resources department is open from 7:30 a.m. to
5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Better yet, get a jump on
current job opportunities by visiting the Emanuel Medical Center booth
at The Modesto Bee job fair this Tuesday, January 20. The event takes
place from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Modesto Center Plaza.
Open
positions include emergency department technician, food service worker,
speech therapist systems analyst IV, and openings for RNs in critical
care, emergency, home health, hospice, post-anesthesia care and surgery.
In addition, LVNs are needed throughout the hospital. Some of the above
positions are detailed in The Bee classifieds.
According to
Yost, some of the hardest positions to fill are pharmacist, radiology
technician, clinical laboratory scientist, physical therapist and
ultrasound technician. Education requirements vary greatly from high
school level, to 18-month or two-year technical certifications, up to
four-year and master’s level degrees.
Integrity, teamwork and
dependability are desired qualities for potential employees, Yost says.
She describes the corporate culture as “very family-oriented. Even
though we’re large, our hospital is friendly.” She says the staff is
great to work with. “We care about each other along with our patients.”
Yost
explains that Emanuel Medical Center offers competitive salaries and
excellent benefits. Offerings span everything from a 100 percent
employer-paid retirement plan and medical, dental and vision insurance,
to tax-deferred annuities, dependent care spending accounts and
education reimbursement.
The staff seems to have staying power.
“We reward our employees,” Yost says. For example, “annually, we have an
awards banquet for longevity. Many of our employees have remained with
us for over 30 years.” She adds, “currently we are offering sign-on
bonuses for various positions.”
Incentives help attract and
retain nurses. “Nurses are placed on a career ladder that rewards
professional competence, continuing education and leadership qualities.”
Yost relates that Emanuel has “a policy to interview all
employees that apply for internal positions. If an employee is
interested, we work toward internal advancement.” However, “positions
are also definitely open to outside applicants as well.”
She says
of Emanuel Medical Center, “We continually strive for excellence and
we’re growing.” The motto for the new year is “Where clinical excellence
and caring go hand-in-hand.” Yost remarks, “I think that’s pretty
accurate for our hospital. When people come back and express
appreciation for the care they’ve received, it reminds the staff why
they went into their professions.”
