>>large photo/caption: Stockton’s own Gitanos know how to bring people together.
The Gitanos Melodic, explosive rock en Espanol with a Latin pop twist
What
if a rock group could unite people of many cultures with a unique sound
that sends positive messages? The Gitanos achieve this and more. It’s
been said that their matchless Latin rock sounds would soothe the soul
of Carlos Santana, while delivering hard-driving party tunes that leave
you asking, “Who are those guys, and where can I get their CD?”
In
just three short years, The Gitanos (pronounced HEEtahnohs), have
developed a strong following, playing “rock en Espanol” throughout the
Bay Area, Central Valley, and the Southern California market. The
Gitanos (Spanish for gypsies) have been featured on local, national, and
international television.
“We have something to say, whether
it’s in English, Spanish, or Malaysian,” said Gitanos guitarist Jimmy
Moreno. “If it’s good music, people will listen to it and enjoy it. We
get a great response with mixed crowds of Anglos, Hispanics and blacks.
We get a better response with Anglos than with a Hispanic crowd.”
The
group members’ influences range from cumbias and jazz, to Jimi Hendrix,
the Police and Sting. “We like so many different types of music
ourselves,” said Moreno. “If you look at any of our CD collections,
you’ll see everything from traditional jazz all the way to rap or
metal.”
He says the group is pop-oriented, with songs about
life, love, work, and play. Moreno continues, “In some of them, there
are moral questions posed. Being honest with yourself. Seeing yourself
as who you really are and working from there. Just the truth about
yourself.”
The band members, who have considered signing a
record contract, may soon be able to quit their day jobs. They’ve
released a single that has sold more than 500 copies and sold out
several times. “Our goal is to have one job and have that be our music,”
says Moreno. “If fame and fortune come along, fine.”
By popular
demand, The Gitanos return to Modesto for a two-day International
Festival gig featuring a special smoke-free concert. Bring your friends
and embrace the diversity of enticing sounds this visionary group
reflects. See you at [time] on Saturday and [time] Sunday at the
[place]!
>>shaded column on side What people are saying about The Gitanos
“This band rocks in any language.” — Mike Klooster, Keyboardist, Smash Mouth
“This band has achieved in their independent studio what many bands in multi-million dollar studios have failed to achieve.” — Tom Carr, Music Annex, Menlo Park
“The Gitanos are an asset to the Latin Rock scene and are on their way to success.” — Edgardo Ochoa, Publisher, Al Borde magazine
“They
were playing acoustic and they were really, really good. I was watching
the audience reaction and I thought, ‘You know what? This band needs
exposure.’ Some people might initially be taken off and go, ‘What is
this?’ But they [the Gitanos] are so good. Everybody who’s seen them
just goes, ‘Wow, this band is good.’” — Middagh Goodwin, a curious
customer at Stockton’s Replay Records, who checked out the Gitanos
during a gig at the Caffeien Den in Stockton
