Modesto Bee Job Fair connects job-seekers with employers, colleges, staffing agencies
By Heidi Howell Sunday Employment Coordinator
Need
a better job or stronger professional skills? Representatives from
local employers, staffing agencies and colleges want to meet you this
Tuesday during The Modesto Bee’s Job Fair at Vintage Faire Mall.
What
should you bring? A notebook, pen and several copies of your resume.
What’s best to wear? A professional-looking outfit and a smile.
Among
the many exhibitors are Big Valley Medical Billing, Dot Foods, Maric
College and Stanislaus County Department of Employment and Training.
Each has information and resources to offer. Dot Foods Foods
“redistributor” Dot Foods seeks transportation, warehouse and
operations managers, an assistant dispatcher, a trailer spotter and
several full- and part-time truck drivers for its Modesto facility.
Management
jobs require a bachelor’s degree and experience, says Destinee Lengel,
human resources administrative assistant, while assistant dispatcher and
trailer spotter jobs call for a high school diploma or GED, trucking
industry experience and knowledge of federal regulations.
A
Class A driver’s license, HAZMAT endorsements and a clean driving record
are required for truck driver positions, which are OTR (over the road)
and semi-local, with varying work schedules.
In business for 45
years, Dot Foods has 180 employees, offers company training and promotes
from within. “In addition to experience and the right background, we
look for dedication, dependability and flexibility,” Lengel says. “It’s a
family owned business, so we haven’t had any layoffs. We have a lot of
offer our employees as far as benefits and competitive pay.”
Candidates
can apply at the job fair, through the company’s Web site at
www.dotfoods.com or at kiosks at Dot Foods, 2200 Nickerson Drive,
Modesto.
Maric College Modesto Campus Part of a

The new 500- to
550-student campus at 5172 Kiernan Ct. in Salida offers an Associate of
Occupational Studies in Medical Assisting degree, with other fields,
such as criminal justice, being added in the near future.
Crone
says Maric College offers graduates career placement assistance with
resume writing, interviewing and job search activities. “The concept
works with both students and employers to make sure of a good individual
fit,” Crone notes.
To apply, applicants must complete an
informational interview, pass a nationally standardized test, make
financial arrangements and complete an enrollment agreement. For more
information, stop by the Maric College booth at the job fair or visit
www.mericcollege.edu.
Stanislaus County Department of Employment and Training To
further your job search, connect with the Stanislaus County Department
of Employment and Training, a lead partner within the Stanislaus Career
Network. Offered are job placement and training services, matching of
employers and employees and other resources.
“The job fair is
our opportunity to show people who are looking for work how to plug into
our system,” says Terry Plett, director of the Stanislaus County
Department of Employment & Training. “We’ll give them information
about our website and resource centers located throughout the area. We
want to make sure people know how to find us, what goods and services we
offer and how we can assist them in helping themselves.”
Plett
says there are opportunities for everyone from kids coming out of school
to displaced workers looking for work as a result of downsizing and
plant closures.
Modesto resources include the California
Employment Development Department, 629 12th St.; Job Club Center, 1207 I
St.; Stanislaus County Community Services Agency, 215 E. Hackett Rd.
and the Stanislaus Economic Development and Workforce Alliance, 1010

Big Valley Commercial Medical Billing and Consulting Services Become
part of a medical billing team through Big Valley Commercial Medical
Billing and Consulting Services. The company is looking for qualified
applicants to fill positions in medical billing, coding and collections.
Not a temp agency nor a training facility, 25-year-old Big Valley
employs roughly 130 people.
Susan Gibson, human resources
director, says that individuals with 10-key skills who can type between
45-55 words per minute are encouraged to apply. In addition, good
communication and organizational skills are important, and bilingual
(English/Spanish) language skills are a definite plus.
Whether
applicants are beginners or experienced, each receives company-paid,
on-the-job training to learn all aspects of medical billing. Some
individuals will learn coding – a very specialized part of the business.
“Most billing companies are departmentalized. You may have a billing,
coding and accounts receivables department,” Gibson says. “We work in a
team setting doing every aspect of billing, just like working in a
doctor’s office, except for the (off-site) location. It’s a very unique
concept that works extremely well for us.”
Candidates are
welcome to fill out an application and attach a resume at the job fair,
fax a resume to (209) 545-2911 or mail it to Attn: HR Director, Big
Valley Commercial Medical Billing and Consulting Services, 3600 Sisk
Rd., Suite 1A, Modesto, Calif., 95356. For more information, visit the
